By now, you have surely heard of a book called The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. This book outlines five ways to express and experience love, and that each of us has a primary "love language" in which we react to the most. What is interesting about the way Chapman theorizes love is that it introduces perspective into the give and take of basic human needs. Now, if this method can be used in the world of emotions (and it most certainly can!), we can adapt this to coaching.
How can you communicate with someone if you can't speak his or her language? In the mental charade of gymnastics, is it even possible to coach if you do not first understand how to recognize which approach to use?
Over the course of the upcoming week, we will be highlighting each separate love language, and explaining how you can tailor your coaching to each individual gymnast with almost no extra effort.
Hours of practice are meaningless if you are explaining everything in French, when your level 2 only speaks Spanish.

Thursday - Words of Affirmation
Friday - Acts of Service
I have been incorporating each of these methods in the gym for quite some time now. I can assure you these are quite effective -- you absolutely should take the time to read these separate posts.
