Gift Giving

It is actually not hard to determine which love language (or combination)  a specific gymnast identifies with. Think of a gymnast you have recently had trouble with. Maybe its fear, a disrespectful attitude, or even quarrels with other team members. Now think of an instance where this gymnast demonstrated some kind of progress in any of his or her problem areas. Evaluate which approach you used to get through to them. If it included anything to do with offering a material reward, you are dealing a gift oriented love language.

You could spend all practice praising their efforts, giving them high fives, allowing them to skip a set of conditioning even. However, none of these approaches will make them feel appreciated and loved as much as receiving a gift from you.  No single love language is better or worse than any other, simply different. Just as different as every other person in the world.. We all have separate mental processes, emotional requirements, and social evaluations.

Of course as a coach, you take on many other titles..
-hair dresser
-butt glue applicator
-therapist
-second mom
-miracle worker
-immortal soul
you know..everyday stuff.. Now we just need to add emotional analyst to that list. It's your job to crack the code, and cater to the results.

Here are some ideas for gift giving

-A handwritten coaches note
-A ribbon or trophy "just because" This shows them you always value them without them having to prove anything to you.
-A snack or candy bar from you to them
-A framed picture of you both together
-Maybe even a new leo?

Start small, and you will begin to see results. Speak their language and you will communicate effortlessly together.
