Know Your Craft!

Just like any other profession, lawyer, NBA player, Facebook developer, anyone who has reached the highest level of performance for their job had one thing in common, they knew their stuff!

ANYONE!

No one can walk in right off of the street and perfectly construct a productive practice with a big picture in mind, if they have never before had any experience prior to that day.

With that being said, being an effective coach does not mean that you have a PhD in everything from Anatomy to Psychology, and you perfectly handle any situation that is thrown at you. It simply means that you are continuously trying to better yourself in what you do.

That means every day. Every. Single. Day. You should constantly be evaluating what you are doing. Is it working? Is it not working? Do you need to adjust or adapt? Maybe you noticed something effective that a rookie rec coach did that made a huge difference in her Intro Gym class! You can learn from anyone! Never be afraid to admit that you have possibly done something incorrectly. We all do it.

We all want to feel like an experienced, knowledgeable coach who has a great plan, attitude, and effective coaching style, but there could be many misinterpretations on what makes a coach seasoned.

Coaching at dozens of meets does not give you experience.

Active participation at those meets does. What do we mean, you ask? Going to coaches meetings, effectively checking your flight's rotation, and promptly verifying the age grouping of your athletes are all great examples. Just showing up at a meet with shiny black shoes and a nice pair of slacks will not turn you into a seasoned coach.

Having tons of certifications through USA Gymnastics does not give you experience.

Applying your knowledge of safe practicing habits, DAILY, does!

If you feel like a coach who could pass a complete evaluation on everything from safety, to something as simple as knowing how to break down the skills of the level you are teaching, then you are doing your job well. If you feel like you are just going through the motions every day. You are.

Unless you feel 100% confident that you are not wasting any time in practice, you are doing a great disservice to yourself, and your students. Always be willing to adapt your methods and coaching style. Never be afraid to be wrong!

..and always remember..

No time is wasted time, if you learn something!
