The biggest coaching DON'T!

NUMBER ONE! Yeah, we said it!

Drum roll please . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Not addressing problems IMMEDIATELY!

Bad form?
Disrespectful attitude?
Even failing to acknowledge praise immediately!

We all know how it goes, maybe today was tough, and maybe you are exhausted by the time you get to beam warm up, but Becky just used incorrect form in her leap and you saw it happen.

Then you think something along the lines of "I just saw that her arm position was incorrect, but I will wait until we get to leap stations to mention it."

Nope. No way. Can't even. You just can't even.

Becky's arm were incorrect and if you don't make her re-try that skill right this second, that is one more time her brain thinks it's an acceptable execution. Even if you only give her one chance to do it over, and she still does it wrong. That is one less time her brain instructs her muscles to move in that way, and still thinks it is okay. I promise, it's worth it and you will start to see the effectiveness of not letting any little things go.

Failing to acknowledge praise immediately! Yeah, we said it!

I bet you just thought of a brand new correction you JUST KNOW is going to fix those bent arms in Callie's kip, but you just hold on to that perfect piece of coaching until after you give her something positive.

ANYTHING WILL WORK

A brief clap
A smile and head nod
An eye brow raising duck face like you are about to hit her with an "Ok girl, I see you doin' your thing on bars today."
Or even compliment her on how much tighter she has gotten in the past two months

The only exception is, it really has to be authentic!

Give your gymnasts a self-esteem boost you believe in 100%, and watch how attentive and appreciative they become of your corrections.

Now it's time to get super complicated and talk about attitude problems.

Well, all of our athletes are perfect, and I'm so glad we have never had to deal with a problem like this . . . . .
. .

In all honesty, there are so many great, positive ways to deal with attitude problems, so do a little psychology research and update that coaching arsenal!

Take more time to assess both you and your gymnast's perspective. Take a few deep breaths and try to consider everything before you confront them. Love them, and they will love you back.
