Promoting Positive Body Image Through Gymnastics

When do young girl's begin to define their own beauty? The answer is, they already are.
As soon as they learn basic communication skills and begin participating in group activities they start to analyze how they fit into a social setting.

Is a 7 year old conscious of her wardrobe, or her hair? No, maybe not. However, if she observes the most important women in her life continuing to criticize themselves on appearance, she will be conditioned to do the same. How does this relate to gymnastics?

First we need to understand what makes a gymnast successful. The definition of a 'successful' gymnast could (and probably will) be an entirely separate topic. For the sake of this entry, let's simplify and break it down to the essentials.

A successful gymnast:
1.Consistent & confident performance
2.Good attendance at practice
3.Goal oriented
4.Handles failure with understanding
5.Support and respect for team culture

Now that we sort of have an idea about what produces as successful athlete in the world of gymnastics, lets go back and figure out exactly where the word "beauty" comes into play.

Oh, it doesn't? Nope..not really.
This isn't a beauty pageant, this is competitive gymnastics.
With that being said, confidence, is most definitely listed in that description.

Confidence and body image definitely correlate, and this is how we can help promote POSITIVE body image in order to produce an athlete who not only feels confident in her performances, but also knows she looks beautiful at all times in her life.

As female coaches, it is our responsibility to show up everyday to practice with a healthy mind, body and attitude. It is our responsibility as a role-model to portray women who strive for success, gracefully handle failure, and run full-force into any obstacles that are in our way.

Success does not mean your hair and makeup is perfect. Failure does not mean that you weigh 5 pounds more than your best friend. The only way we compare our body to our obstacles, is maintaining our health in a way in which we can achieve the physically demanding skills of our sport.

In our gym, there is no fat or skinny. Only healthy and happy.
